Travel warning from the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB)

Freezing rain could lead to restrictions in rail and bus traffic from tonight (12.-13.01.2026) Salzburg, Upper Austria (Salzkammergut) and the eastern region affected by massive ice formation until tomorrow afternoon

Low temperatures currently have the whole of Austria firmly in its grip. In the coming night from Monday to Tuesday, freezing rain with predicted amounts of 3 to 6 liters per square meter may occur in the area from Salzburg via Upper Austria to the eastern region. Due to the expected massive ice formation on points, vehicles and overhead lines, restrictions in local, long-distance and freight traffic are to be expected in the future. Against the background of the persistently low temperatures, the ice is not expected to melt until tomorrow afternoon. ÖBB therefore recommends that all travellers postpone non-essential journeys.

ÖBB is constantly monitoring the situation and is taking comprehensive precautionary measures to keep the impact on rail and bus operations as low as possible. Passengers are asked to find out about their connection before starting their journey and to allow more time.

The current status of events is continuously available at streckeninfo.oebb.at. Further information is available on oebb.at, Scotty Mobil, via the ÖBB social media channels and by phone on 05 1717.

Parking in Hallstatt - Information

Dear Guests,

We are happy that you have chosen to take an excursion or holiday in Hallstatt. You are probably aware that this historical village dates back more than 7,000 years. In 1997, the village was honored with the position on the UNESCO World Heritage list. We welcome over a half a million visitors to the village every year.

The village is nestled between high mountains and the Hallstatt Lake. Available space is in short supply making parking in the village a problem. To solve it we have made the village centre traffic free during the daytime. It is not even permitted for hotel or guest house visitors to drive through the village. The few existing parking spots are reserved for the inhabitants of the village. We provide several alternative ways for our visitors and overnight guest to enjoy Hallstatt with the least inconvenience possible. Below you will see the parking options and how to access the hotels located in the village centre.

Reservation of parking spaces not possible

Our editorial team is often asked if it is possible for day visitors to Hallstatt to reserve a parking space in the large P1 or P2 car parks in advance. This is not possible. It is therefore advisable to arrive early or to take the bus or train. If you are staying overnight in Hallstatt, we recommend that you contact your host in advance. You will find the contact details on your booking confirmation.
