In recent years, another sport has come out from the shadows of alpine sküng - crosscountry skiing. Anyone who has been to the Blaa Alm, an idyllic low lying meadow between Altaussee and Bad Ischl, and done a couple of rounds on a pair of cross country skis, knows why. It is a unique natural experience. And the Blaa Alm is, as part of the 220km cross-country trails in the Ausseerland-Salzkammergut region, just one of the many cross-country skiing destinations between the 67 lakes in the heart of Austria. Enjoying a worldwide comeback this all-round healthy sport is a popular pastime for young and old, and the Salzkammergut, with over 700km of cross-country trails, is attracting the attention of cross-country skiers.
Through mountain and valley
The 700km of cross country trails are spread high and low across the whole of the wonderful Salzkammergut region. High-altitude trails, from the Tauplitzalm to the Postalm, attract well known teams such as the German national team in the late autumn for training. They are snow-sure, and offer possibilities for all levels of athlete. By far the greater part of the trails are located in the sunny valleys. Between lakes and mountains, along well known footpaths, past meadows. Cross country skiers of all ages will find their own personal favourites. At the same time, the trails are cleverly laid out so that you can reach remote areas which are not possible in the summer. But that is not all. The trails are dotted with cosy mountain huts that invite you to rest and linger.
