BergeSeen Trail Stage 5

From Mondsee to Wartenfels

From the tourism office in Mondsee (located between the market square and the lake promenade), the trails leads through the Lindenallee to the lake promenade (Seepromenade) and heads right along the main highway for a short distance arriving at a large store where a path forks to the left. The route continues along this path until it reaches an intersection.

The trail then crosses the main highway and heads upward through the community of ‘Höribachhof‘. It later makes a descent, crosses the Fuschler Ache (small river), keeping right at the fork and then immediately turns left again to a farm. Passing through the farm and the sheep and goat gate, the trail continues uphill through a section of forest in the direction of Obernberg. Just above the farm, the trail follows a forest road to the left and then makes a right onto a forest path. This moderately steep path ascends toward Wartenfels. This location offers a rest stop at the tavern Gaststätte Forsthaus Ansitz Wartenfels. From the tavern, hikers have a 10-minute climb to the Wartenfels Castle Ruins. A magnificent vista is the reward for this small effort.

An excellent circular route awaits those who are surefooted and have a head for heights: the path first leads upward to the castle ruins. From there, a steep climb with safety cables leads to the summit where especially stunning vistas of the Schober Mountain (1328 m) await.

Wartenfels to Fuschl am See

The trail descends along a hiking path through the forest and later a meadow to Lake Fuschlsee arriving at Hotel Waldhof. The route continues left along the lake to the town centre.

Many prominent figures have explored this region: nobles like Archduke Johann and Empress Elisabeth, scientists such as Friedrich Simony, poets and authors like Nikolaus Lenau, painters like Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, musicians and composers such as Johannes Brahms. Did they ever think that hiking in the Salzkammergut might have no end? That they could tramp from one lake to the next and then onward to yet another? Day by day along the shores of crystal-clear waters? Week-long excursions through quiet valley forests, over sunny alpine meadows and up mountains fuelled by the anticipation of the next destination? Tips: Hiking in spring

The days in the Salzkammergut are getting longer. The temperatures are finally getting warmer, more and more hikers are heading to the mountains. But be careful: Especially in spring, there are a few things to consider: There is often still a lot of snow on the mountains, so be careful when crossing snowfields. After winter, you are usually still a bit "rusty", so warm up accordingly in advance and plan your tour carefully. Let your host know the planned route. This can lead to quick help in an emergency. But there's more to consider:
