Ice cave in Obertraun – Speleology

High density of caves

The Hallstatt-Obertraun Cave Association - founded in 1949 as a section of the Provincial Association for Speleology in Upper Austria - sees its main task in the exploration and documentation of the caves of the inner Salzkammergut. The northern Dachstein area in particular is the main attraction for forays into the underworld due to its high density of caves - over 400 caves are already known here. In recent years, two main areas of research have developed: on the one hand, the Schönberg Cave, located in the walls northeast of the Schönbergalm, has been explored over a length of 8.3 km.

When a new sequel was found in the Hirlatz Cave near Hallstatt in 1983, it was the prelude to a veritable rush to the cave system, which allowed the researchers to penetrate kilometers into the world underground. Countless expeditions lasting several days at temperatures around 5°C, almost 100% humidity and constant darkness have increased the total length known so far to 67 km.

The parts explored today extend under 5 mountain peaks and from the lake level of Lake Hallstatt to 1500 m above sea level. The computer-aided documentation of this longest cave system in Austria - every metre of the cave walked on is measured - forms the basis for any further scientific work, be it in geomorphological, hydrological or botanical terms.

In addition to these focal points, the work program of the cave association includes an annual research week on the Dachstein massif, demonstrations, slide shows and the implementation of a New Year's celebration with a torchlight procession to the Koppenbrüller Cave.
