BergeSeen Trail Stage 32

The second section of the ‘Loser’ alpine variation traverses the south-western karst plateau of the Tote Gebirge Mountains. The trail includes expanses of alpine meadows which will astound hikers with their unbelievable blossoms in early summer.

From the Loser Hut to the Hochklapf Saddle (2 hours)

From the hut, the trail heads uphill over the ski slope to the Loser Road and then continues to the highest car park at the ‘Loseralm’ Restaurant. The route then ascends to the left for a short distance (the small but beautiful Lake Augstsee can be reached in a short time). The trail continues over the flat terrain of alpine meadows, leads under two ski lifts and finally arrives at a trail marker above the Eglgrube. The route descends to the right through mountain pines along the Karl Stöger Path and crosses rocky passages until reaching the Hochklapf Saddle (1487 m). At this point, the ascent trail from Lake Altausee (path No. 212) arrives from the right.

From the Hochklapf Saddle to the Albert Appelhaus Hut (2 hours)

The trail continues to lightly descend in a north-easterly direction with the small Augstwiesen Lake visible on the left and eventually arrives at the broad alpine meadows of the Augstwiese. The route continues over sometimes swampy terrain which is initially flat and then slopes downward to the numerous small alpine huts of the Augstwiesenalm. The trail then lightly ascends along a broad path through sparse pines to the final destination of this stage—the Albert Appelhaus Hut.

Many prominent figures have explored this region: nobles like Archduke Johann and Empress Elisabeth, scientists such as Friedrich Simony, poets and authors like Nikolaus Lenau, painters like Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, musicians and composers such as Johannes Brahms. Did they ever think that hiking in the Salzkammergut might have no end? That they could tramp from one lake to the next and then onward to yet another? Day by day along the shores of crystal-clear waters? Week-long excursions through quiet valley forests, over sunny alpine meadows and up mountains fuelled by the anticipation of the next destination?
