BergeSeen Trail Stage 21
From Gasthof ‘In der Kreh’ to the Feuerkogel Mountain (2 ½ hours)
At the trail marker in front of the tavern, our path (No. 832) starts by crossing over the Langbath Stream and then continues to a forest road. The route heads left over a stream and then immediately turns right and continues upward along the forest road for a length of time to a hunting hut. Soon afterwards there is a steep ascent to the right to the former Pledialm Meadow (beautiful view).
The trail continues upward through the forest and then turns onto a more difficult ascent to the left. The route crosses increasingly steep mountain slopes and leads to a cliff face. Soon thereafter the path travels under the cable car and after an ascending curve to the right, reaches the mountain station of the Feuerkogel.
From the Feuerkogel to the Rieder Hut (2 hours)
From the mountain station of the Feuerkogel cable car, the route heads west along the edge of the plateau on a well-built path. The trail passes by several alpine huts until finally reaching the valley station of the Heumahdgupf lift. The route then crosses the slopes of the Heumahdgupf Peak and continues left to the Gasslhöhe, a narrow passage between the Heumahdgupf (right) and the Great Steinkogel Mountain.
The trail descends into the Edl Valley where another path forks right to the Alberfelskogel Peak. The route ascends once again in a south-easterly direction, crossing the mountain pine-covered southern slopes of the Gamskogel Mountain, to the junction with the marked trail leading to the Great Höllkogel Peak. The route continues straight ahead through hilly terrain (ascending and descending) to the Rieder Hut.
Many prominent figures have explored this region: nobles like Archduke Johann and Empress Elisabeth, scientists such as Friedrich Simony, poets and authors like Nikolaus Lenau, painters like Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, musicians and composers such as Johannes Brahms. Did they ever think that hiking in the Salzkammergut might have no end? That they could tramp from one lake to the next and then onward to yet another? Day by day along the shores of crystal-clear waters? Week-long excursions through quiet valley forests, over sunny alpine meadows and up mountains fuelled by the anticipation of the next destination?
