"Durchgangalm Circuit" (S512) - Rustic alpine pastures and cool bathing spots

From the lake to the alpine pasture - the perfect mixS512 Durchgangalm Runde

Riding the "Durchgangalm Runde" from Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt offers a wonderful tour through the Dachstein Salzkammergut with varied landscapes and great views. The tour combines the drive along Lake Hallstatt with a challenging uphill drive through the Echern Valley and offers both scenic and driving highlights. The route offers a mixture of uphills, including a crisp climb from Gosauzwang, and a long, sometimes steep descent. Rustic huts, such as the one at Strähnhag, invite you to take a break. The tour is well signposted and can be easily described outdooractive.com found on outdooractive.com.

More about the route

We start in the centre of Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt at the market town office and turn right into the market square. After about 150m at the "Unimarkt" (name of a supermarket) turn right into "Ramsaustrasse" (name of the street) and after 350m we cross the Traun and turn left into "Hinlaufstrasse" (street name). After about 1.7km Bad Goisrer district called "Gschwandt" (km2.3) we turn left at the crossroads and drive 600m to turn left again at the next junction (km2.9). Now we follow the "Elektrodenwerkstraße" (street name) for 1.7km to the "Pass Geschütt Bundesstraße" (B166) (km4.6), into which we turn right in the direction of the village of Gosau.

Caution is advised: on the following 2.9km on the B166 to the "Gosauzwang" (near the bridge over the river "Gosaubach") (km7.5) where we pedal in the curve to the right up another 500m in the direction of the village of Gosau. We shift to the lightest gear and cross the busy B166 road to the left at km8.0 onto the rough "Gosauleitenstraße" (street name), which requires a lot of driving technique. After a short but crisp ascent, it goes gently downhill again and after 3.4km we reach the busy road again with the designation B166 (km11.4), cross it and cycle 3.2km to the fish pond (km 14.2) in the Gosau district called "Vordertal" to leave the "Pass GeschüttBundesstraße" (B166) for today.

We continue on a forest road in the direction of the centre of Gosau, straight ahead past a farmstead slightly uphill to the crossroads, which we reach after about 1.8km and this time turn right (km16.0).

We follow the fort road exactly 2km to the "Sattelgraben" and from here we turn right down for 500m, where we cross the "Gosaubach" (river name) (km18.5) and turn left into the "Gosaubachweg" (street name) and after 2.9km upstream we reach the "Gosauseestraße" (street name) (km 21.4). We turn right into the state road with the designation L291 "Gosausseestraße" (street name), cross it after about 100m and continue in the direction of the restaurant "Gosauschmied" in the district of "Intertal". After about 200m we keep left and after another 900m on asphalt we reach the "Gasthof Gosauschmied" (name of the resurant).

Last charging opportunity before the world-famous town called Hallstatt. With coffee and cake, this would be the perfect place to charge a few more meters of altitude into the battery.

We turn left into the road marked L291 and cross it after about 100m at the bus stop (km 22.3) to reach the way up. It is best to already engage the easiest gear and go up on a short trail section, after about 500m we cross a small waterfall (km 22.8) above the reservoir. For the climbing enthusiasts, here are the entrances of various via ferratas

Now the journey continues slightly downhill again and we follow the signs for 1.3 km in the direction of "L291 Gosausseestraße" (km 23.6). Always stay on the main path, the junctions are all dead ends. We cross the L291 turning left and continue through the shadow of the mountains on asphalt and pay attention to the traffic. To the right in front of us the mountain called "Gosaukamm" with its numerous mountain peaks - illuminated by the sun, we reach the cable car called "Gosaukammbahn" after 2.1km and the barrier we pass. In front of us opens the mighty panorama with Dachstein, "Gosausee" (Lake Gosau) and the mighty mountain "Gosaukamm". Fototime (km 25.6).

Now we continue to the left along Lake Gosau with probably busy pedestrian traffic, but after 700m we leave the lake to pedal up to the left (km 26.3) and we are already back in the solitude of the mountains on gravel. The curves wind up the mountain for 3.8km until a signpost to the right points to the "Ebenalm" (name of an alpine hut) (km 29.1), definitely worth a look.

Otherwise, just continue to turn left after 200m at the crossroads. Now we follow the forest road with a great view of the "Gosau Valley" (Gosau Valley) and the surrounding mountains: After 4.3 km we reach the crossroads "Grubenalm" (name of a large alpine pasture area) (km 33.6 / altitude 1350m) and here we can take a trip to the high moor called "Löckenmoos", so there is enough time and energy.

The detour to the high moor "Löckenmoos" we turn left down, but after 100m we turn right up the forest path to place our bikes there and climb up to the moor area called "Löckenmoos".

Otherwise, continue on the original route following the tour number S512 for 1.6 km to the junction "Plankensteinalm" (name of a large alpine pasture). Here you have the opportunity to take a detour to the right and drive about 200hm to the "Plankensteinalm", the largest contiguous alpine pasture area in the region, where you can comfortably marvel at the alpine landscape in the sun.

However, since the tour still takes quite a long time, we have already covered 35.2km and a large part of the altitude, but there are still a crisp 150hm to the highest point ahead of us, so we recommend to continue here at least until the Rossalm stop (km 37.4) which we reach in 2.2km. From the managed "Rossalm" (name of the alpine pasture) after 500m to the top right, driving to the crossing "Strähnhag" (slope name) (km 39.0) 150hm steep to 1.1km uphill.

Standing on the bike with bent arms and ready to brake, we now glide towards the valley, past the "Durchgangsalm" (name of an alpine pasture), the namesake of the tour. After about 2km at the crossroads (km41.0) in the hairpin bend, we turn left and stay on the main path for another 4.2km. At this crossroads (km 45.2) we drive straight, to the right, so no closure is allowed, after another 300m we take the right turn and get directly to the bridge over the waterfall called "Waldbachstrub" in the Hallstatt "Echerntal" (Echern Valley) at km 46.4.

Here there is again time for a variety of photos.

From the waterfall, the path through the Echern Valley is mostly asphalted. Attention: often wide oncoming traffic here - drive slowly and with foresight! Here, too, there is a beautiful view of Lake Hallstatt and waterfalls on the opposite rock face. On the way through the valley we also pass a walk-in waterfall and after about 1.7km we pass a barrier (km48.1) and drive 1.5km along the "Malerweg" (street name) following the signs straight ahead to Hallstatt (km 49.6).

If there is still enough time and Hallstatt is not overcrowded, it is always worth a look.

Otherwise, we turn right onto the "Hallstätter Landesstraße" (road name) (L547) in the direction of the village of "Obertraun", where we spend most of the following stretch of 3.6km riding on the cycle path and, after crossing the river called "Traun" (km 53.2), turn left into the cycle path to Bad Goisern and follow it for 9.8 km to Untersee (km 63.0).

For the water rats, there are plenty of opportunities to jump into the lake on the 4.5km from the river "Traun" junction (km 53.2) and after 6.6 km there is still a place to stop for refreshments directly on Lake Hallstatt in the "Seeraunze" (name of the snack station) (km 59.8), so that it is not bursting at the seams.

In the Bad Goiserer district with the name "Untersee" we leave the cycle path to the right into the "Strandbadstraße" (street name) and follow the wine-red signposts of the "Durchgangalm Runde S512" for another 700m and turn slightly uphill (km 63.7) in the direction of the Bad Goiserer district "St. Agatha". After 400m at the fire brigade we turn left in a hairpin bend and after 800m we reach the "Pass Gschütt Bundesstraße" with the designation B166, cross it and turn right (km 65.0) following the cycle path in the direction of Bad Goisern for the remaining 2.7km to our starting point in Bad Goisern.

For those of you who are already rumbling, we recommend the kitchen of the Mountainbike Hotel Agathawirt. Simply go straight ahead at the fire brigade junction to the B145 federal road and then left and a few metres later the guest garden is calling.
